European Cloud Pact
The same woman who increased the maximum driving speed on Dutch highways from 100 km/h to 120 km/h in 1988 (thank you, Neelie Kroes) has also started to look into increasing the awareness about cloud computing in Europe in her role as euro commissioner for the Digital Agenda. She wants to achieve this by setting up a European Cloud Partnership.

Running into the cloud
Thursday the 23rd of November, I attended the Cloud Forum XL event. What I find interesting about such meetings is not just to listen to all different opinions expressed by those present, but especially to hear all the questions put forward. About 500 CIOs gathered at the WTC in Rotterdam to discuss advantages, opportunities, and also risks regarding new cloud technologies.

IT, the saviour or enslaver of the Financial Industry?
Last month we visited a European Financial Services Technology summit in Portugal, where we were invited to host a presentation based on the changing world of IT. IT is obviously a growing challenge for financial institutions these days, so getting the decision makers together under the Portuguese sun is always interesting in terms of sharing problems, ideas and solutions. Banks, brokers, investment & insurance companies, even anti-money laundering organizations all admitted to be more and more dependent on IT. This is not a bad situation at all, but it does give food for thought on how they, and even we, manage that situation.

IT Governance: prevention and cure

Stand up if you’re in favour of cloud computing!
Recent research by Computer Profile among 4300 people in charge of IT shows only 6.7% of Dutch public bodies uses cloud applications. Doubts on data security appear to be the main objections. By propagating this message – consciously or not – the public sector has a negative influence on adoption of cloud solutions in the Netherlands.
European cloud: the status of the hype
Recently, we were bombarded with the ominous message that the “European cloud” is actually a sham. This statement was especially put forward in response to questions surrounding the introduction of Microsoft’s cloud service Office 365, on which occasion Managing Director Microsoft UK Gordon Frazer had to recognize that even information in European clouds is not always safe for American ‘searches’.
Growing pains accompanied cloud computing into maturity
A global survey, commissioned by Avanade, shows nearly 75% of questioned C-level respondents uses a form of cloud services; a 25% growth compared to Avanade’s 2009 survey. Of companies not yet using cloud services, 75% indicates they will start doing so in the near future. Read more
